Dreads look cool and different, but you�ll need to set aside some time to get them started initially and to look after them on a regular basis. Wash your hair
� You�ll need to wash your hair to get all the oil, dirt and residues removed from it, as anything left in it will discourage knotting up in the hair to form the dreads. This also means you shouldn�t use a conditioner when you wash.
� You�re best off using a dread shampoo either from Knotty Boy or DreadheadHQ, which can then be used to wash your head while you�ve got dreads.
� With straight hair it can be good to plait the hair after shampooing, then brushing out when the hair is dry. A crimping iron will also assist in getting hair frizzy.
� Wait until hair is totally dry before completely brushing it out so it gets really big as well as fizzy.
Sectioning the hair
� This is where you section the hair with a comb and hair bands to make backcombing easier and so you get dreads that are more professional looking.

Waxing
� You can do more backcombing after waxing but it�s harder to do, so be mindful to do the previous step very well before going on to waxing them.
